Elizabeth B. Gibbons. Kitchen Islands. December 02nd , 2017.
A kitchen island can not only serve as extra counter space, but can also serve as extra storage space. A large kitchen that can accommodate a wider kitchen island can include cabinet space. This cabinet space can be useful for a homeowner who doesn`t already have enough storage space n the kitchen. A hanging rack from the ceiling for pots and pans can also be installed once a kitchen island is there to accent it. The bonus storage space that a kitchen island offers is a benefit for the homeowner and a re-sell perk for the home.
The new kitchen trend has homeowners doing whatever`s necessary to make room for an island, including moving walls and taking space from other rooms. The island is the new "it" feature for every kitchen. Self-proclaimed cooks and chefs are looking for elements such as flip-down cutting boards or a life to bring heavy mixers and blenders up to a convenient level. Other amenities include a microwave oven drawer effective for saving countertop space, motorized countertops that can adjust to accommodate the height of the cook, and don`t forget the flatscreen television.
The first thing you have to decide about your kitchen island is what you want it to do. You could choose just to have one that is additional cabinet and work preparation space. There are models available with plumbing so they can come equipped with a sink, possibly a garbage disposal, and a dishwasher. If you prefer, your kitchen island could be designed to support a range and oven. It`s not uncommon to find or build islands with seating like you would with a bar or breakfast nook.
Some islands have a counter overhang which is perfect for extra kitchen dining space. Adding chairs or bar stools to a kitchen can eliminate the need for a breakfast table. A island with eating space can also make the kitchen feel more welcoming and open for guests. Extra seating in the kitchen with the help of a kitchen island allows for a more relaxed feel for guests than a formal dining room.
The normal counter top height of the lower cabinets, including the island is 36". One approach is to install a raised bar area along the living area length of the island. The standard bar height is 42" , making it 6" above the level of the island counter top. Seating required standard bar stools with a seating height of 30". Minimum bar overhang is 12".
